Today has been another great day. This area got several inches of snow this during the night/morning, so the first day of spring has been a cold one outside.
Most of the day inside has been warm and cozy, spending a lot of time holding the little guy. We have been taking turns doing kangaroo care at each of the touch times (at least the ones that aren't in the middle of the night). He has been tolerating it very very well, so they've said that there is no set limit in the amount of time we hold him when we do, which has been absolutely wonderful.
They took out the orogastric tube and put in a nasogastric tube in order to work on breastfeeding, which they said can take some time in the little ones that have been really sick.
His antibiotics have been stopped. They will likely take out the venous line in his belly button tomorrow as they plan to stop his IV feedings. Once that is out, they can put him in some baby clothes, which will be the first time he wears anything but a diaper and tubes/wires everywhere. They also plan to put him in a bassinet tomorrow since he is regulating his own temperature well and hasn't need the incubator in awhile. His repeat chest x-ray this morning looked great and the air that was seen on the right side yesterday is now resolved!
Once he does well with 8 full feedings a day (they are gradually increasing the amount of breast milk he is getting through the nasogastric tube every 3 hours) and all is looking well, he'll be able to come home. Dr. Santiago said that it would likely be about a week, with the very best case scenario being 3 days and worst case being 10 days. We asked him that question so that Shane can better plan what to do about work as he's like to be able to be home for a bit once Connor comes home as well.
Shane's doing kangaroo care right now, so I'm taking a quick break to update this and am about to take some lullaby CDs back there so that he can listen to something other than the beeps of monitors around him (luckily most of the beeping hasn't been his monitors).
He is starting to get poopy diapers, so all systems are a go on that front :) After we changed one this afternoon, he sprayed us again, so at least he has a sense of humor.
Connor is now officially 1 week old. We certainly never imagined that his first week of life would be like this, but are truly thankful that pretty soon we should be able to take a healthy, beautiful baby boy home with us.

So, so glad you all had such a great weekend and that Connor's made so much progress--I'm so excited that you're able to hold him now!!! :)

I've been keeping you guys and Conner in my prayers. I'm very excited for you that he is doing so much better. You are both very strong. Praying for more and more good news.
ReplyDeleteHooray! I was so excited to read your last few entries, and share in the joy you must be feeling when holding that little guy in your arms. Who knew you could ever be so excited about getting pooped and peed on!

Wow! What a wonderful day for you and Connor. I noted that he has gained weight with all he has been through. God is good. Blessings for another great day.
